On May 26, 2026, Anete Ilves, Advisor to the Ombudsman on international law and artificial intelligence, was elected Chair of the Artificial Intelligence Working Group of the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI).

ENNHRI brings together 51 national human rights institutions from throughout Europe. It is a significant European-level platform for cooperation, aimed at strengthening and supporting human rights institutions as they face various fundamental rights challenges at both national and European level.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has brought new challenges and risks to the fundamental rights. With this in mind, the AI Working Group promotes information exchange amongst ENNHRI members by sharing information on the most recent fundamental rights violations in the field of AI, as well as by educating the public and raising awareness regarding the risks related to AI. Such an exchange of experience and information will contribute to raising awareness among the Latvian public regarding the risks of AI in the context of fundamental rights.

Being in charge of the ENNHRI working group means not only strengthening the reputation and visibility of the Office of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Latvia in the field of artificial intelligence at the European level, but also representing the interests of European human rights institutions by collaborating with various European-level institutions and organizations.

Anete Ilves: “This entrusted position is an honor, as it demonstrates that we have proven ourselves internationally as a skilled and trustworthy partner. It will undoubtedly be an intense task, but one that is of great value to society as a whole, since the risks to fundamental rights posed by AI are a relatively new subject.”
